Better tech for greater impact

Teach For America is using AI and emerging technology to align business and digital transformation

By Vanessa Smith, Workflow contributor

The holiday season is upon us. Amid the joy of Thanksgiving and the shopping frenzy associated with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we have Giving Tuesday, which encourages people to support their favorite nonprofits and experience the joy of giving back rather than just receiving.

I know that joy firsthand. One of the greatest honors of my career has been the opportunity to give back—through not only the work I’m doing with ServiceNow.org, but also my role as board chair of Teach For America – Greater Philadelphia.

Special report

Nonprofit Digital Transformation Report 2024

I was drawn to Teach For America (TFA) because of its incredible mission: to find, develop, and support equity-oriented leaders who transform education and expand opportunities for all children. But mixed with their inspiring work come the challenges confronting them as they strive to bring out the best in their students. For example, more than 90% of public schools do not have adequate mental health support, and over 8 million kids are chronically absent—and those are just two drops in the bucket of the litany of issues faced by educators.

Encouragingly, technology has the power to help mitigate many of the challenges nonprofits face. And by providing better access to AI and other technologies, we can create a ripple effect to improve the lives of the most vulnerable among us, including those students on the fringes of the education system.

ServiceNow’s Nonprofit Digital Transformation Report, released earlier this year, reveals how technology can either hold organizations back or propel them forward depending on how they use it. As part of this research, TFA Chief Digital and Technology Officer Alan Murray shared how technology can help reimagine the way teachers access knowledge and resources at scale, leading to improved teaching experiences for educators and learning experiences for students.

From what I’ve seen of TFA’s approach, it is undeniably excelling at nonprofit digital transformation (such leading organizations are dubbed Pacesetters in the report). For many years, the organization has harnessed machine learning and other traditional forms of AI to find donors, recruit qualified candidates for its teacher corps, and analyze classroom outcomes.

Today, it is piloting generative AI (GenAI) to help prospective teachers select their placement. “AI can now have a conversation with you to understand your values and needs, and help you find regions that match your preferences,” says Murray. TFA is also looking at GenAI for other uses, including creating synthetic applicants to train selection interviewers.

In addition to embedding AI, the education nonprofit is investing in digital experiences for all stakeholders while optimizing back-end systems to streamline offerings and amplify the core work that matters most: teaching kids.

In the future, TFA plans a major overhaul of its systems to eliminate pain points. One planned investment includes a cloud-based identity repository that brings together personal information of prospective teachers and accounts for different user groups, while digitizing the teacher placement process, making it easier for schools to access profiles of prospective teachers.

[TFA] is investing in digital experiences for all stakeholders while optimizing back-end systems to streamline offerings and amplify the core work that matters most: teaching kids.

TFA is not the only nonprofit embracing advanced technologies. Over the last year, I have seen a rapid increase in the understanding and application of AI across the entire nonprofit sector. This illustrates the growing impact of AI on every business and how pacesetting nonprofits such as TFA are using it to make a difference—quickly and with prodigious impact.

So, when you’re considering where to direct your philanthropy during this week that encompasses Giving Tuesday, know that there are many nonprofit organizations striving to fulfill their missions by creating incredible experiences for their staff, beneficiaries, and volunteers through innovative and practical applications of technology. This is the kind of innovation that will make your donation go further and be directed to where it’s needed most.
